- 6 slices white sandwich bread, stale, 1.5cm/0.6″ thick (see notes)
- 3 tbsp strawberry jam
- 3 tbsp caster sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp milk
- 2 tbsp butter
1 Optional: Cut the bread into rounds, as large as you can. See notes for tip.
2 Spread 1 tbsp of strawberry jam into the middle of 3 of the rounds, leaving an edge of about 1cm / ¼” so when you put the sandwich together, the jam does not ooze out of the side. (See photo below) Put sandwich together.
3 Place egg and milk in a small bowl and beat lightly.
4 Spread sugar on a small plate.
5 Heat butter in large non stick pan over medium high heat.
6 Quickly dip each side of a sandwich into the egg mixture, then roll the edge in the egg mixture as well. Then 7 place in the pan. Repeat with remaining sandwiches.
7 Cook each side for around 2 minutes, until a deep golden brown.
8 Remove from the pan and immediately place on the plate with the sugar to coat each side and the edges. The faster you get it from the pan into the sugar, the better the sugar will stick.
9 Serve warm or at room temperature.
